Emirates Thalassemia Society officially participated in the 3 days 14th International Congress of Thalassemia and Hemoglobin and 16th Patients and Parents Conference, held in Thessaloniki, Greece, dated 17th-19th November 2017 with a delegation of selected active UAE patients and Board Members. The delegation was leaded by Mr Abdul Baset Mohd Merdas, Vice Chairman of the Society, Mrs. Khalida Khammas, CEO and Executive Secretary and 10 UAE Thalassemia patients. One of our patients Mr Abdul Rahman who had successfully completed bone marrow transplant with the help of immense support from UAE Government was also invited as a speaker to present on the current active and high quality medical and social services being provided to the UAE patients. Abdul Rahman also highlighted the fact how the UAE government and Emirates Thalassemia Society support patients in several ways to initiate the Bone Marrow Transplant procedure outside the country in spite of the large costs involved. He further highlighted the essential role of the Emirates Thalassemia Society in supporting the UAE Thalassemia patients and raising awareness to the UAE community in order to reduce new born infected with Thalassemia. Emirates Thalassemia Society was also invited to put up a kiosk where they created a festive atmosphere on occasion of 46th UAE National Day where they distributed customized gifts, henna stall, traditional Emirati snacks and sweets to introduce the culture of the United Arab Emirates to the international attendees. The stand once again hit the bench mark and became the most popular stand at the conference venue. Once again Emirates Thalassemia Society successfully completed the aim of participation of Thalassemia patients in international and local conferences, providing social support to patients and encouraging them to be confident, accept their lives happily and communicate with other fellow Thalassemics.
