The Contest of (What is Thalassemia?)
It came to light since 2007, and shall continue till the message of Emirates Thalassemia Society reaches the greatest number of the students of schools and universities whom we consider the forearms that shall work for the prosperity of this Country. They are the generations of tomorrow who are responsible for protecting themselves and those around them from Thalassemia disease, and their carefulness for the non birth of new patients in the State.

About Emirates Thalassemia Society:
Emirates Thalassemia Society is a society for public welfare, established in 1997 by the efforts of the parents of the patients and the permission from Ministry of Social Affairs. One of the most important main objectives of the Society is to provide the financial, social and moral support to Thalassemia Patients in United Arab Emirates. It also essentially aims to raise awareness amongst the UAE Community about this fatal disorder and its hazards and sufferings of those who are infected by it through health and cultural awareness campaigns at the State level to prevent the disorder by arranging lectures, seminars, contests and distributing booklets, brochures and other awareness programs.
Thalassemia patient suffers from Hemolysis and need regular blood transfusion every three to four weeks. The regular blood transfusions require them to use different chelation medicines to expel the extrA accumulated iron in the body such as Desfral injections under the skin for (10-12) hours and sometimes (24) hours daily or tablets.
That is why the Emirates Thalassemia Society uses all the preventive measures to protect community from the future problems resulting from Thalassemia.
The Society also participates in various local and international conferences for the purpose of acquiring and exchanging experiences, developing remedial services for the patients and to induce their participation in lectures and discussions actively. Joining the Thalassemia International Union is considered one of the major goals sought by The Society.
The results of the researches and studies conducted over the previous years showed that there is one in every twelve person in UAE carrying the genetic character of Thalassemia, the number which makes the UAE at the top of the world countries in terms of the percentage of the disease carriers.
This motivates all of us to make sustained efforts to work towards this disorder and work to educate the community through the co-operation and support of all categories of the community.
This contest is deemed to be one of the important awareness programs conducted by the Society, targeting the most important section of the community to sensitize and educate them, namely the future generations, the students of schools and universities, fathers & mothers of the future.

Objectives of the Contest:
Spread the health and cultural awareness about Thalassemia in the United Arab Emirates community to limit its spread and prevent the birth of the new borne cases of the disorder.
Develop the creative capabilities and the intellectual, cultural and technical skills and talents of the students and encourage the same towards the awareness of the community members.
Benefit from the advantages of the modern means of communication and information technology in spreading the awareness about the Thalassemia disorder.
Encourage medical test before marriage and its importance through awareness.
Change some of the social trends and behaviors to reduce the endogamy without medical tests which is deemed the most important cause for the birth of new borne cases of Thalassemia.
Develop the sense of national responsibility in every emirate of UAE in which the citizens of the country are present to give the positive health image of this country and maintain its position in contributing in limiting the spread of the Thalassemia.
Develop the sense of the importance of voluntary work with the participants in the campaigns, whether they are students, teachers, or members of the community who work together in participation in taking the responsibility towards the community.
Encourage the students for reading and research, apply and innovate awareness methods to protect from Thalassemia.
The UAE schools, including Al Ghad, Model schools, religious institutions and private schools, together with the Government & private universities, colleges and institutions shall compete in spreading the cultural and health awareness about the disorder using the modern means of communication and information technology, using one of the following methods :
First category: – (for universities – smart application category). Design a smart application that contains information about Thalassemia to raise awareness about the disorder and record it in a media content not more than five minutes to be published on the society channel via YouTube platform provided. Participants should make sure that this application contains an option that allows the evaluation committee to know the amount of reaction by calculating the number of individuals who downloaded and used this application and received awareness. The evaluation criteria in assessing the work technically will be based through the quality of the design, accuracy of the medical information provided and the number of views that the content will achieve on the Society’s official YouTube channel.
B– Second Category: – (for the high school level – the artificial intelligence category). Designing a smart robot that serves the needs of Thalassemia patients and provides awareness information about thalassemia and use it to educate students and faculty members within educational institutions, whether internally (school or university) or outdoors during the competition period. Filming this in a media content for no more than five minutes and sending it to the Society for publication on the Society’s official YouTube channel.
C- Third Category: – (for the secondary level – documentary film category). Design a documentary film not more than five minutes, which is a documentation of the journey of the Emirates Thalassemia Society since its establishment on the occasion of its journey of 22 . Highlighting the role of the society in the services of the patients in addition to its awareness role in the community and the support it offers throughout the year through various activities to spread health awareness amongst the community members for preventing the birth of children with Thalassemia and highlighting Thalassemia and how to prevent it through the use of innovative awareness methods.
D- Fourth Category: – (for the primary level – Awareness Film category). Design a short awareness film which contains artistic content of not more than 5 minutes provided that the content (graphic) aims to inform the community of the suffering of Thalassemia patients and urges community individuals to do a premarital test. Evaluation will be based on the elements of creativity and innovation in addition to the accuracy of the medical information medical presented and the number of views that the content will achieve on the Society’s official YouTube channel.
E- Fifth Category 5: – (optional additional category – television advertising category) is an optional additional category, which is an incentive for those who aim to increase the scores, which increases the chances of winning the competition in addition to the basic categories mentioned above. Design a television advertisement subjecting to the awareness about Thalassemia provided that the content contains elements of creativity. The evaluation criteria will be based on the creativity level in advertising the idea and in addition to the accuracy of medical information and the number of views that the content will generate on the Society’s official YouTube channel.
* The contests are divided into three phases as follows:
First Phase (Preparation)
A- The work team shall prepare a plan and select any of the three innovative topics above.
B- Participating task forces shall produce the work plan.
C- Establish account on the social networking site “Instagram or Twitter” to spread awareness about Thalassemia disorder on it throughout the competition period.
Second Phase (Innovation and Design):-
The work teams participating in all categories of Thalassemia Olympics will incorporate the following hashtags (#Emirates_Thalassemia_Association #What is Thalassemia? #ThalassemiaOlympics) on their social media accounts of the competition.
The First teams of participants in the first category (smart application category) and the second category (artificial intelligence category) should use their creations to raise awareness in the community within their educational institutions and outside simultaneously documenting this through photography and interaction across the accounts of each team on social media sites.
The teams participating in all innovative categories of the Thalassemia Olympics must process media content (video) for each team according to the innovative category that was subscribed, provided that teams participating in the first category to record media content (video) showcasing the smart application designed by prior to their awareness about Thalassemia. The teams in the second category must design a special video for the robot, which educates members of the community that the duration of media content (video) not more than five minutes.
3- Third Phase: – (Final Contests)
A- The participants of all categories shall send the media content and the work plan to the premises of Emirates Thalassemia Society.
B- The Society shall publish all the works of the participating teams on its official YouTube channel at the same time to follow and calculate the interaction of the members of the community with each work through the number of views, likes and participation of the publication provided that the media content of any category of the Thalassemia Olympics does not exceed five minutes.
C- The participants shall promote the links of the innovative media contests which they designed and which shall be published only by the Society on its official YouTube channel through their own account on “Instagram or Twitter”, to achieve` the largest possible number of views.
Note: Emirates Thalassemia Society shall not bear the burden of marketing the participating works, but bear the responsibility for publishing the participating works on its channel on YouTube channel only.
– The innovative work shall not be published except through the Emirates Thalassemia Society via its official YouTube channel. All participating teams are prevented from posting on any other platform to keep ideas from being cited and replicated.

The First Group:
Students of the secondary section of all Government schools, including Al Ghad & Model schools, religious institutions and private schools.
The Second Group:
Students of high school of all the Government schools, including Al Ghad & Model schools and religious institutions and private schools.
The Third Group:
Students of Government and private universities, colleges and institutes.
The school, university, college or institute shall form a student work team to set a comprehensive awareness work plan about Thalassemia disorder by innovating new protection method by selecting one of the above three innovative topics.
2- The work team shall consist of maximum 5 students and shall be administered by two supervisors with one of the supervisor being specialized in computer subject.
3- The preparation phase shall start along with launching the competition at the beginning of the academic year
(2016 – 2017) till the end of the competition of the first phase which shall be announced later, provided that the commencement date of the final phase and the official submitting of the participating works to the Society shall be determined one month before the evaluation time to be displayed on the official YOUTUBE channel of the Society and calculate the volume of the positive interactions and responses through their works which shall be stated within the evaluation criteria.
4- The participants should establish an account on the social networking site “INSTAGRAM” or “TWITTER” to spread the awareness and promote their innovative works through it.
5- It is necessary that their innovative work should be a production of the work team defined by the participating authority.
6- It is necessary that this innovation shall have unprecedented or adapted or repeated idea and shall be an original development idea for the awareness methods to protect from Thalassemia, provided that it contains the creative aspect, keeping in mind that there will be a committee controlling and monitoring any adaption between the competitors.
This innovation should be free from anything which violates the scientific honesty or breaches the intellectual property rights.
The logo of Emirates Thalassemia Society shall be placed on all publications to be used in the campaign and hashtaged # in the name of Emirates Thalassemia Society, in addition to the hashtags # in the name of “Contest_ What _is _Thalassemia?), and another hashtaged as “” (# ThalassemiaOlympics).
Participation form shall be filled through the web site of the Society provided that the full names of the students and supervisors should be written and the link of the documentation page, noting that the deadline of accepting participation is 31/10/2019.

The participating schools, universities, colleges and institutions should prepare a clear work plan attached to a detailed explanation of their own innovation then send the same to the e-mail of the Society.

All participations and innovations are the right of Emirates Thalassemia Society after handing over and on objection shall be raised on this.
The Society is entitled to participate with the winning works and present them in the conferences and events of which it make or participates in.
The juries are entitled to call the competitors to discuss with them the work submitted to the contest.

The deadline for submitting the works is: 12/02/2020.
The Ministries and the educational bodies and councils shall distribute the electronic booklet of the competition to their schools, universities, colleges and institutions.
2- The schools, universities, colleges and institutions willing to participate in the competition shall fill the e-form through the website of the Society then send the work plan approved by the participants on the e-mail of the Society.
3- A Jury shall be formed by the Society in cooperation with Ministry of Education, the ministries and supervising educational bodies, councils and the medical centers.
4- The final results of the competition shall be announced in an honorary awarding ceremony organized by the Emirates Thalassemia Society on a date to be determined later.

– The deadline for accepting and receiving the participation forms and the work plan is 26/12/2019.
– The deadline for receiving the participating works from media contents and action plans is 12/02/2020.
– The date of publishing the innovated works is 13/02/2020.
– The end date of final contests phase is 14/03/2020
– Arbitration during the period from 15/03/2020 till 26/03/2020.
– The honoring ceremony shall be on 13/04/2020.
